Chapter 17

Arielle

“How do you really feel?” Reign asks, bending a little at the knee so he can lock his gaze with Arielle’s.

Now that they’re alone, he’s not willing to take a glib answer that will placate everyone.

Arielle cups his face, losing herself in the jungle green of his eyes. “I really do feel fine,” she tells him, meaning it.

“But half the Grail is gone,” Reign says, watching her closely. “And now you have half the obsidian…”

“I know, but just like Dinah said, they balance each other out.” She can feel both of them, yet neither of them. “They just…are.”

Reign brushes her hair back from her face, his hands coming to rest on her shoulders. “You need to tell me if anything happens in there, okay?”

“Like you’d tell me?” she challenges quietly, her hand brushing the Mark.

Reign’s lips flatten. “I’ve got it under control.”

“I know you do. That’s not what I asked.” Arielle kneads the tension she can feel building in his muscles. “But fighting the darkness takes its toll. I’ve felt it myself.”

He lets out a breath, resting his forehead against hers. “When it comes to protecting you, Ari, my strength is endless. Boundless.”

Arielle’s hands slide up, her fingers tangling in the hair at the back of his neck as her heart swells. There’s a reason Fate chose this guy to be the Grail Keeper. She steps closer. “Trinity, the Grail, spoke to me the first time I met you. She said ‘it’s him.’”

Reign pulls back, his eyes widening. “Outside the library.”

Arielle smiles softly. “I was so angry with you—”

“Because I almost ran you over in a stolen car,” he says with a wince.

“But was so drawn to you,” she finishes, her hands sliding down to his chest. “Trinity knew we were destined.”

Reign pulls her in as he draws in a shuddering breath. “Damn straight we are.”

Arielle curls into the hard muscles of his chest, now familiar with how well they fit, yet still reveling in it. “I love you,” she whispers.

Reign’s arms tighten. “When I thought I’d lost you…” His voice trails away, as if it was swallowed by the unmistakable agony she can hear. The same agony that’s echoing inside Arielle. His hand cups the base of her head, tipping her face up to him. “Let’s not do that again, huh?”

Tears glisten in Arielle’s eyes as she smiles at him. “It was the worst.”

“It was worse than the worst,” he murmurs before pressing his lips to hers.

Arielle loses herself to the sensation of kissing Reign. Of their heartbeats aligning. She clings to him, to his heat, to his hardness. To every nuance, taste, scent that tells her he’s alive. That she’s alive.

Reign kisses her back, his lips hungry, his hands molding her every inch to his muscled planes. She welcomes it, needs it. Wants them to be as close to one just as much as he does. They fall into each other, into this moment, reaffirming their feelings.

Assuring their souls that their other half is still here.

When they finally pull away, they’re both panting a little.
